| I used the Cricut to help decorate our campsite at the 2009 Reynolds County Relay for Life. The theme was Happy 25th Birthday. We used a wooden spool for the base and layer of the cake and covered it with white packing foam. With the DesignStudio and several cartidges I cut out the silver 25, the lacy edges, the cake topper, and the words. The Cricut was also used to cut out the items on our banner that was used to decorate the front of the booth and also our banner when we walked as a team. The candles are floaters for the pool which were cut in half. I used the Cricut to cut the flames. It was fun making the decorations and everyone at the Relay simply loved the cake! |

CARTRIDGE EXPLORATION - Ashlyn's Alphabet
This week I went camping and took my dogs. They are both white dogs but after our camping experience were the color of fire pit ash. The camping trip was wonderful and very relaxing. I was able to regroup my creative self, and for the first time in a while I started to notice changes of color on the rocks and discovered I enjoyed the sounds of birds chirping. On this trip I decided it was time to get in touch with my inner creative self, and so I started sketching again and playing with watercolors. This was so much fun and very soul searching too--I loved it!

To recap the Cricut cartridge that I am exploring,
Ashlyn's Alphabet by Sara Schmutz is a wonderful font cartridge. You receive a full set of upper and lower case alphabet as well as numbers and some symbols. Some of the symbols that are on the cartridge are different than others, more universal. The creative features that come on this cartridge are: Block, Cursive, Skinny, Icon, Base Shadow, Icon shadow. Yes, these fonts are as obvious as their titles. They will be great for presentations, children's projects, or even school event. Each of the letters has a nice look to them and will be easy to read in whatever project you use them for. The Icon feature I discovered last week, and don't forget that you also have the Icon Shadow that complements the original feature really well. The Base Shadow is your shadow feature to the regular font that comes with the cartridge. Now you can make your titles, sidebars or even individual letters stand out or pop better by using the shadow feature. In case you are new to the Cricut family, how you use this feature is really very easy. Simply cut your letters out then load your paper, click on the base shadow feature (make sure the button is highlighted) then press button repeat last (this will remember the last set of letters or words). Or you can simply press the buttons again that you just cut out. Now the shadow feature will cut your same letters out, only they will be slightly fatter so that you can see your original set of letters better. This is kind of like an outline feature. On a note, please make sure that you use a different color of paper for your shadow, otherwise your shadow and original letters will all blend together.
The image above shows you the different styles of fonts on this cartridge. Also if you haven't updated your DesignStudio then click on
this link, log in and update your DesignStudio and you will get Ashlyn's Alphabet in the library so you can start welding your letters together to make your own titles for your scrapbook pages. Check back next week as I continue exploring all the wonderful new cartridges that are part of this Cricut family. Happy Cricuting my fellow Cricuteers!

TECH SUPPORT NOOK - Q. I get the message "Characters Won't Fit" when I try to cut letters, but I only have a few selected and my size is only 4" or so.
A. Try turning on the Paper Saver mode (bottom left of the keypad). It's possible you've selected a "y" character or something with a longer tail. This makes it so the distance between the top of the highest character selected and the lowest point is greater than 6", thus the warning message. By selected Paper Saver mode, everything will rearrange itself to fit.
