I just received the cricut expression for an early Christmas gift. The cutting mat was curled around the machine when I opened the box. I'm assuming the cutting mat should be completely flat for a good cut. Is there an easy way to flatten the mat? I've had it under a heavy book hoping that would flatten the curled spot. I'd greatly appreciate any help!! I'm so ready to start playing with my new toy :-)

It shouldnt affect your cuts. but just a reminder....HUG YOUR MAT BEFORE YOU USE IT or you will never get your cuts off!!!!! it shouldnt be "that" bent from being in the box, as long as it was on the top of the machine

Hug my mat before use? I haven't heard or read that anywhere so far. I'm guessing that means the mat should be on the warm side before using it, I'll make sure to remember that. Thank you so much for your help!!!!! :-)

I think she means to "hug" it against your clothes so that it will make the mat less sticky. The cuts can be very hard to get off the mat if it's too sticky and you don't want to tear them.

I 'hugged' my mat & made my first cut. It worked like a charm & came off the mat just fine. The size of the cut didn't come close to the spot that is bent tho so I will make the next cut large enough to see if the bend affects the cut. Thank you so much everyone for all your help!!!

Enquiring minds want to know! Yes. However, there is the possibility of transferring lint, dog or cat hair as well. That's why most choose to just pat it with the palm of their hands a couple times to make it less sticky. HTH

I wish I'd known about hugging the mat before use! I was really excited to use the Cricut that I just went ahead and made my cuts. The mat was really sticky!!! I'm glad I got the spatula to lift the cuts, though. That certainly helped me. Welcome to the forum, from one newbie to another!

Well, I made a larger cut today, it went into the spot that is bent & what I was worried about, happened - no cut in the spot that is bent. I've had it sitting under a heavy book for 3 nights now & it hasn't helped the bend in my cutting mat at all!! When I made my cut tonight, the part of the cut that went over the bend was a solid shape, the cut was fine all around except on the two sides of the shape where the bend is, no cut at all there. I would really love any suggestions anyone has to take the bend out of my mat. I'm worried that my only option is to go buy a new mat :-(

I would suggest you phone Cricut Customer service and tell them about your bent mat. They SHOULD send you a replacement! Here's the link to their phone number: http://www.cricut.com/support/Contact.aspx

PC will replace that mat. but when you do need to buy new mats, try to get them from Joann's. They allow you to use the % off coupons on Cricut products other than the machines and carts (so mats, blades, vinyl, etc you can get with a coupon).
