Hi, I have a Cricut Expressions Machine and I want to cut shapes from an 8.5x11 piece of cardstock (instead of the 12x12 default). I think I've followed the instructions in the users' manual, but when I hit the CUT button, I keep getting the message that the paper is too small... Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Are you using the Expression alone or with Design Studio/Gypsy?
If you are using DS or the Gypsy you don't use the set paper size button. Just place your paper where you want it so it covers the design on your DS/Gypsy screen.
If you're using the Expression alone, are you putting your paper in the bottom left corner (as it's fed into the cricut) and moving your blade to the top right corner of your paper, then pressing set paper size?
How big is the object your are trying to cut?

Hi! Thanks so much for your reply. I'm using the Cricut Expressions, and I'm aligning the paper at the bottom left of the paper and then moving the blade to the top right corner of the paper. Then I press the set paper size button and it doesn't work - when I press cut, I'm told that the paper is too small - it doesn't seem to matter what size I make the object.....But I also don't actually see how to set the paper size after I press the button. Sorry if this sounds clueless.

When you are looking at your mat with the arrow facing left, you place the paper in the bottom right corner of the mat. Then move the blade to the upper left corner of the paper. Then press set paper size. Your Cricut should calculate the distance the blade is from both margins and know the size of the paper.
If you know your image will fit on the paper, there really isn't a need to use the set paper size. If you want to cut multiples on the smaller paper, you would want to set the paper size.

You don't actually enter the paper size. When you hit set paper size the E knows what size the paper is based on its location. Be sure that you do not have a quantity set or a large image size set. It sounds like you are doing it right but something has to be entered making the E think you have more to cut than it has room for.

Also, Check How you are orenting your cut. Did you set your machine on portrait or is it the default landscape. If it is portrait you may want to switch your paper so that the longer edge goes across the paper left to right not top to bottom for landscape cut. Hope that Helps G
