I recently got the basic cricut which I love. My spatula is getting really icky. What is the best way to clean it? Also how will I know when the blade needs to be changed. Thanks for any other advice.

I use rubbing alcohol to clean my spatula. As far as the blade, I can tell if it starts to rip my paper/card stock.

i use baby wipes (the ones I use to clean my mats with). for the blade when it starts tearing paper and i've adjusting settings it's time to change

I use GooGone onmy spatula - works great! Also use it on my scissors when they get gooped up.

This is my recipe for cleaning my spatula. I wipe it down with a baby wipe. Then I clean it with rubbing alcohol. Everyone thinks my spatula is brand new. It must work.
Change your blade when your paper is ripping. Sometimes all you need to do is take the blade housing out of the Cricut and blow on it. Your blade will be like new for a few more cuts.

I use rubbing alcohol to clean my spatula. Takes everything off! I also clean my blade every week. Bits of paper and other cutting media will sometimes stick to the blade and get pushed up into the housing. So I make sure to clean my blade too. Especially after using glitter paper! HTH

I have the same blade in my "E" that I got with the "E" in February, 2009. I have used my Expression a lot. I have never had to clean the blade; however, I have had to take it out and had a few little papers stuck to it (when I saw my paper getting curled up while it was cutting; I just pulled the paper off, put it back in the housing and have never had any more trouble with it).
Having said that, I have only cut papers, vinyl and corrugated cardboard (thin). I won't use glitter papers on my "E". If I use glitter papers, I merely cut out the shape I need to lay/glue under a cutout where I want to make in impression.
I, too, use alcohol to wipe off my spatula. You have to exert a little pressure cleaning it off, but it wipes it all off and looks like new.
I also use alcohol to clean up my mats; then, I add zip dry glue to re-sticky them. (I was only willing to try this after my WARRANTY was up, though). I have only had to do this with one mat; am only on my third mat since February, 2009, and the third mat has been used a lot. I am just now noticing it starting to be a little less sticky where I cut the most. I will use blue tape for months before I will open a new package of mats.

I use WD-40 or you can also use Avon's Skin-So-Soft. They both work great with little effort.

I use Un-Du sticker, tape and label remover. This is great for lifting paper off the mat (especially a new one) Leaves the mat clean as a whistle. The nice thing about Un-Du, You do not have to re sticky your mat. Once Un-Du is dry (takes only seconds) the mat is sticky again. I also clean all by tools with Un-Du. Love the stuff!!!!
