 I have a brand new expression 2 which I had to send in for warranty work because it didn't have the correct definitions in order to link to craft room. In the meantime I merrily went ahead and designed two projects in craft room just waiting for my machine to come back. When it did, I tried to cut and was informed that I needed to insert cartridges which I didn't have. Shouldn't craft room know which cartridges you have before it does the design? Also, say I go ahead and buy all these cartridges, does it pause cutting when it comes to a new required cartridge and allow me to change the cartridge before proceeding on the same page? Thanks

CCR won't know what carts you own unless you link them. The carts that are pre-loaded on your Cricut are linked to CCR when your register the Cricut {usually the Thursday after you register the Cricut because that's when PC updates their system}.
Before you start cutting a design, CCR will prompt you to insert the cart(s) used in the design before it starts cutting.

Thank You, but shouldn't CCR only allow me to design with the cartridges that I have linked?

No. You can design with any cartridge that is listed in the extensive CCR library. When you go to cut your designs you either have to insert the cartridge, or have your cartridge linked, or buy the digital version if it is available.
No matter which applies you must own the cartridge in some form before you can cut the design.
