They really are quite cheap... I replace mine every time my paper/card stock starts tearing.

I fold aluminum foil in to a few layers, then poke the blade through it several times. This sharpens it a little bit. There was a post not too long ago by someone who had used a power tool to sharpen her blade, but I do not remember the name of the tool or the poster. I will see if I can find it. I would be careful doing anything that would void your warranty if your machine is still under one. I would think sharpening your blade would do so. HTH.
