My machine is not detecting my mat after the first cut. What do I do?

I am new to cricut. I have set up my design in CCR. I am able to make the first or second cut. After that my machine is not detecting the mat. What can I do to continue?

I had the same problem on my Expression2. I had to keep shutting down my computer multiple times to finish all the cuts! It was very frustrating. I would also appreciate some insight into this issue
