My daughter is teaching 2nd grade for the first time this year and I have a favor to ask. She and her fellow teachers would like for their students to get to do the Flat Stanley project but she teaches at a school that is in a moderately low income area and many of the families would not have the means or be willing to take the time to send Flat Stanley "on a trip" to visit relatives or other areas. So, we thought we would try here to see who might be willing to "host" a Flat Stanley. I did this a couple of years ago for a fellow message board member and had a blast so that is why my daughter thought we might find some willing volunteers here. For those who aren't familiar with Flat Stanley, you can find lots of information about him on the internet. He's a very well traveled fellow. So if you are willing to be a "host", you will receive a Flat Stanley from one of the 2nd graders. Since we are all crafty, feel free to "dress" him appropriately for your area (even if he has crayon clothes when he arrives). Then just spend some time showing Flat Stanley around where you live. Some photos of him "out on the town" would be greatly appreciated and then just help Flat Stanley write a brief story or journal about his trip that the students can read. Any additional info or "souvenirs" you would like to include would be appreciated but certainly not necessary. Then just mail him back. The photos can be mailed or emailed to me and I will gladly print them for you. This can be as easy or elaborate as you want. My Flat Stanley happened to visit during the famoust State Fair of Texas so I dressed him to match the infamous "Big Tex" statue that towers over the fair grounds. He had so much fun at the fair and also joined us on our bowling league. I've attached a few pictures for an example. If you are willing to be a host, please post here and PM me your address. I will let you know what addess to return him to and I'll get an idea of the the length of time Stanley has to spend with you. He really is a pleasant house guest! I'm posting this to both Circle Chat and General Chat to try to get as many hosts as possible. TIA

Are you taking care of sending these to us, or do the kids get out addresses? I'm not sure I would feel comfortable with the kids having my address, but if it was you handling them I might be okay with that.

The children will not be mailing them. My daughter and I will take care of all of that. They will just be "making" Flat Stanley and writing a general letter thanking you for having him visit you. None of your specific names or addressess will be given to the children. Edited by user Saturday, September 25, 2010 3:22:30 PM(UTC)

Will each child be sending their own flat Stanley? And is there a time limit how long he gets to visit with us?

I sent my class' Flat Stanleys to Iraq to visit my DH a few years ago. They turned out SO cute!!! (And I was able to make a scrapbook with the pictures and letters the soldiers wrote, then color-copied them for the kids.) For kids that don't travel, this is an AMAZING opportunity. My chaps were so excited about it! I am teaching 2nd grade now and would be more than happy to receive one!! PM me details of when to expect him and I'll send you my address!

I don't know where you live but if Topeka, Kansas would be of interest I'd be glad to host Flat Stanley. We did this one year for our Granddaughter in Minnesota and had a great time! Will PM you my address in case you need me.

We are hoping that each child's Flat Stanley will have somewhere to go. There are about 70 in total so I thought I would see how many would be willing to help here. For any others, we will try to find parents who are willing to send them to relatives, friends, etc. We hope to have them in the mail by this Saturday and he would probably be able to stay for 2-3 weeks. It's great if he can send a post card during his visit. The kids love to hear how he's doing.

I would be willing to host a flat stanley in northern Alberta. Depending on how long he can stay he might even get to go to the rocky mountains. P.M me for address and don't worry about return shipping. How many children in the class? since the Halloween candies will be going on sale maybe he could bring back some little mars bars or smarties. Some treat that can't be bought where Stanley is from.
