does anyone know how I can have 3 inch high letters and make them only 1 inch in width?? I have the schoolbook cartridge.

I think you would have to modify your letters using DS or Gypsy. You can't change it like that on the machine itself (wish I could ).

You might try using the Fit to length button. When you use this the size dial will now control the length(or in the case of a letter, the width)...you may not get the same height you need but you would be able to set your width this way

Your Cricut is made to adjust both the height and width of an image to keep it in proportion. So when you choose one (usually the height but depending on the orientation of the image in the handbook, it could be the width or using the fit to length as mentioned), your Cricut will automatically adjust the other.
With a Gypsy or DS, you can choose the height and width independently from each other.
