and if so is there a certain size plate or are they all one size? What about "big shot"?

Yes, you can use Sizzix dies in the Cuttlebug.
Thick die.."sandwich" (You can also use this sandwich for the Tim Holtz thick dies)
B Plate
Thick die

Thin die.."sandwich" (these dies are the same thickness as the Cuttlebug dies)

You can use Spellbinders, too!

(I sometimes put a piece or two of cardstock here. This aids in getting a good embossing surface)

You can use either machine they are interchangleable. I have the big shot , the price was better at the time. The bigshot cutting pad has directions on it for making the sandwiches. You can buy longer plates, cutting pads for each machine depending on your needs..there really are so many options. The only thing I don't like about the big shot is that it doesn't fold away for storage, but I have a shelf built into my cheap goodwill purchased desk that works great for it. I use a plastic card box that I purchased from Joann's to use for storing all my embossing folders.

I was considering getting a BigShot, but now that Cuttlebug has longer plates available I don't need to!!
