"Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight." As a child we sang this song all time. But is it OK these days? I have an idea for a card or LO, but, I don't want to be politically incorrect or offend someone. What do you think???

I guess it depends on who you are going to give it to, I don't find it offensive at all having sung this song as a child and teaching it to my daughter as she grew up

Please don't flame-I am just giving opinion. I guess I would not address anyone as "yellow" or "red"...I also heard that song growing up, but there were a lot of things I heard growing up that I don't repeat as an adult.

I have no problem with it. The song is just saying that even though we may appear different on the outisde, we are all the same on the inside, and we are all created by God because He loves us and so that we can honor Him with our worship.

I don't find it offensive but I also don't find it acceptable anymore. We don't refer to Native Americans as "Red" anymore. They were never RED in the first place. We also don't refer to Asians as "Yellow". It's just extremely dated and was never really "right" in the first place.
In our house the phrase is "I don't care if you're purple with green polka dots". Referring to a skin color that is obviously way out there and clearly not possible, is making the point. ;)
Being "Brown" I wouldn't use it ;)

I also sang this as child an it never occurred to me what the colors meant. I wasn't taught that people are different A Little ones mind works very differently than a an adult. As in Elmo is red and Big bird is yellow. But I suppose some people would find it offensive.

(And technically 'Asians' wouldn't all be yellow anyway since it covers more area than just the Far East.  ) Even though *I* don't think it is it might make a difference on how the layout and/or card is designed if you're not sure of you're audience. I think it'd be fun with Big Bird and Elmo now that someone mentioned it.

Being that I would fall under the "yellow" catagory, I guess I would have to ask myself if it offends me. I also grew up singing this song and find no offense to it.
I try to look at intention, and what this means to me is that no matter our "color" we are all his children.
I would say to put love into this project and THAT will be what shines through. Politally correct or not.

For instance, if you were to say to someone "Well, he is a _______ skinned, no good...blah...blah....blah, then yes, it would be used in a derogatory manner. HOWEVER, the fact that you are saying that they are "ALL precious in HIS sight..." the context is pure and thus the intent is pure, so why someone would find offense with that is beyond me. Doesn't this song do exactly what society is asking us to do, which is be inclusive? Just my .02

i'll go with this as my answer too. and add that it does really depend upon the recipient.

As someone else has already said no one person is exactly red, yellow, black or white, so I don't find offense to the song at all. I grew up singing it, so did my children and the concept behind it as it is has been for many, many years is we are all the same. "Jesus loves the little Children, all the children of the world", is what is being taught. I honestly never associated the colors in the song to actual skin colors of people when I was growing up either. I just thought it was like saying you can blue, purple, green or whatever and they just used those colors. Maybe my parents at some time explained it that way I don't really know? I am Caucasian, but my skin color is not white! I have a very nice tan right now!

I don't see any problem with it at all. It's the point of the songthat matters. And yes, you could pink and green, blue and brown.... and the song still has the same meaning. Anyone finding this song offensive is looking for a fight.

Thank you  . Yeah...that's me. I have help with the red ( duh LOL) and I'm fair in the pic because it's the middle of winter and I'm only half ( but culturally whole ;)) Hispanic. I understand what everyone is saying with the intent of the words. I think for ME, since we have never really referenced anyone by color/creed/anything non-environmental ( because the fact my family is a Flippin RAINBOW .... maybe a DOUBLE RAINBOW - teehee) I just don't see the point of pointing out colors at all. I would probably chose a phrase like "All of us, great and small. He loves us one, he loves us all." ~M

I come from a big family and over the years through marriage and adoptions, our family covers all the colors in that song. I can tell you for sure that no one in my family finds that song offensive. There is no reason to be offended by those words. IMHO

I personally am NOT offended as I and my children have grown up with that song. I have heard the newer version but can't remember the words. So many kid songs have been revised because they are not PC in our modern world.

I don't find it at all offensive ... at the time the song came out, they were stressing that the skin/hair color just doesn't matter, we are all the same. That's the point you are trying to make and your heart is in the right place.

I think that if your project is created with love, how could someone be offended? I wish that we all could spend more time showing our love for one another instead of worrying if we are politically correct. Just my opinion, and how I feel.
