I am a first time user and I have difficulties with getting the paper off of the cutting mat. It is so sticky that the paper does not come off without tearing or curling. I have ALL the available Cricut tools that are supposed to help, but I have wasted more paper than I would like! Is there a trick to making the cutting mats not so sticky but remain useful? Thanks!!

I try to use thicker card a few times on a new mat before I use paper. Then I curl the mat slightly and then place it paper side down on the table and remove the mat from the paper. Hope you understand this and that it might help.

it has been suggested taking a clean cotton t-shirt and patting the mat with it a few times or even patting your hands on it to get some of the stickness gone. but the more you use it the less sticky it will become

I walk my hands all over the mat before using it. The oil from your hands help break down the sticky a little. This always works for me. HTH!

I find the cheaper card/paper really sticks to the mats even when the mats aren't that new. It really does pay to use good quality card stock like coredinations and use the other bulk buy card for your matting and layering.

I number my mats. I keep one just for things without a paper backing like the rubberstamp sheets, very thin foam rubber, stemcil materials/transparencies, shrinky dinks. The first-generation paper mats I use for thicker cardstock, thin chipboard, etc., when those start to "slip" I use a little bit of painters tape at the corners, and then it's ready for thinnner paper.

If your a computer nerd like myself go on youtube and type in "circut dan" and watch his video. He has the perfect explanation as to what you should do to keep your matts lasting longer. As some of the ladies have said before me you should pat your mat with the oils of your hands before using it. I've followed these instructions and you'll see in the video the guy explains it alot better than me but my mats do last alot longer and it doesn't tear up my paper at all. I hope this helps ya!!!

I normally don't use full sheets of cardstock, just little scraps to fit my image I'm cutting, and I've not really had problems with those ripping when I go to pull them up. I also go realllllly slow when pulling up intricate cuts with my spatula.

I am definitely going to try walking my hands over the mat. I always dread starting with a new mat because of the excess stickiness. Thanks for the tips.

Someone shared a tip with me, can't remember who. Bend your map back and forth, from both ends. Don't bend to far. I have found this helps and also first cutting some cardstock.

I bought the 12x24 mat pack and was excited about using them. However, my mat is so sticky I have all I can do to get the layers of paper off the mat and I'm furious because I keep wasting good paper. I've been using SU cardstock and I've never had this problem in the past. I walked my hands all over the mat and also used a clean t-shirt prior to the first use. I've washed the mat 3 times and its still so sticky I don't dare use any more paper for fear of wasting it. Totally frustrated......

I thought that washing the mat restored it's stickiness? Have you tried sticking down some scrap paper a couple of times and peeling that off?

I had to wash the mat as that was the only way I could get the stuck pieces of paper off the mat. Once it air dries I'll try it again. Thanks.

Try turning the mat upside down and peeling your paper back. Your cut may still be stuck to the mat, but the rest should peel off without curling up. You can then take your little spatula and remove the cut.

My first mat was so sticky that I had the same problem with my paper tearing CONSTANTLY! I found that after patting my hands over the mat and sacrificing a few pieces of cheap paper, the mat was much better!

I also have used a paper towel to quickly blot my mat and eased some of the stickiness. ALso I save my used computer paper and sometimes will put a sheet of this down , remove it and that eases the problem some. Terrie Greer

I use my sweatshirt... lol I take the sleeve pull it over my hand and blott it on the mat.. it works everytime! Careful not to use a sweater or material that leaves to much fabric balls behind as this will make your mat not sticky at all!!! thicker cardstock works for the first few times also... I find the thinner stuff sticks and tears the first few times.
