There are a lot of reasons. What font are you using? Some are easier to cut than others. Some are difficult to cut at small sizes. I have found it helps to slow the machine down and increase the pressure if the paper is ripping. Your blade could also be too dull for detail work.

If you are in need of one, I have a cheat sheet that provides the blade depth, pressure & speed for all different types of paper & other materials. If you would like a copy, PM me. Becki

If it's tearing while it's cutting, I would definitly decrease the speed and increase the pressure. Sometimes you increase the pressure and increase the speed. It depends on the type of paper you're using and/or size of the cut.
If it's tearing while you're taking it off the mat, try using the multi-cut feature and the metal spatula. HTH
