I have only done one T-shirt with fabric paint and/or glitter. Both products say to apply to a clean item that has not been washed in fabric softener. After it is painted/glittered, I know it has to be washed in cold water. Can I use fabric softener after it's been worn and needs to be washed again, or will the fabric softener cause the paint or glitter to come off sooner? I don't dare put it in the dryer because of the heat, and line dried clothes are so hard and stiff if you don't use fabric softener. Thanks for any advice you care to give me.

I used the Tulip fabric paint on mine and have washed AND dried it with no issues of the paint coming off.

Look for the post-painting laundering instructions on the paint that you used, but I think fabric softener is OK once the paint is on, it just makes it hard for it to bond if it is between shirt and paint.

I've done shirts with acrylic pain, Tulip fabric paint, and the Plaid Simply Screen paint. I think one of them says to hand wash but heck no! I put it in the washer and dryer and yes, I use fabric softener after it's been painted and can be washed.

DITTO.... wash and dry like anything else in your laundry.
I also heat set everything just to make sure the bond is good.
The reason they say no fabric softener on it in the first place is FS leaves a "film" on your clothes so the paint is not actually on the fibers but the FS.

Thank you, everyone, for your replies. I just didn't want to do a lot of them if they were going to be high maintenance.
Does anyone have any experience with laundering clothes you put fabric glitter on?

My glitter solution had held up through a gazillion washes.... the girls wear these shirts almost every Friday...
Mix the glitter in with the paint. It totally works. Take a lot of glitter but it's worth it. It's not a blind you in the sun sparkle but it definatly glitters a bunch.
I haven't done the good old Glue then glitter method so I can comment on that.

Fabric softener is a wax, that's why you can't use it before painting your shirt. I used Simply Screen fabric adhesive with Martha Stewart glitter on a t-shirt. I figured the glitter they sell in the fabric paint section is probably no different so I wasn't buying it. The shirt has been washed a couple of times (inside out) and so far so good! I can't speak for any other kind fabric glitter materials, so if you can get your hands on the Simply Screen adhesive (by Plaid) I suggest that. Michaels had the Simply Screen stuff - that's how I first discovered it - but it was clearanced. Also saw it at AC Moore but then it looks like they clearanced it too.  I think it's great fabric paint and adhesive!
