I teach preschool 3s. They are so sweet but for many this is the first time away from home. I made this board for the kids so that they can have clear expectations for what we are doing and when their 'special somebody' is coming to get them. I use a dry erase marker on the glass and X out parts of our day as we have completed them. Circle time (sit criss-cross applesauce) Craft Time Recess Snack Time Read Time Closing Song (Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear) Go Home This is made with A Child's Year, with the exception of the Criss Cross Applesauce which in on My Community. Great idea! I need to make one similar for my 4 year old preschool class. Did you just make it on paper and put glass over it? Where did you find the glass?

Just go to a thrift shop and buy a big frame with glass or a poster frame would work as it has plastic "glass" cheaper alternatives and we are re-using something.

very cool idea! I love this! My nephew is Autistic and they suggest stuff like this for Autistic children. Maybe I should make him one with stuff he is supposed to do at home.

This is where the idea came from for our home. It's just a regular photo frame, nothing special. Our board at home was pre-cricut but it has Make bed, Brush Teeth, Brush Hair, Breakfast, Get dressed, Get backpack, Leave for school. I left some space at the bottom for weather and therapies. The most important thing in our day is that there we are clear on expectations. No Surprises. We don't do surprises! We don't transition well to surprises. So as much fair warning as possible makes for a much smoother day. We have a second one for after school. My DS isn't autistic but has a lot of similar symptoms. I remember one melt down because we wanted him to do his homework and the it wasn't dark out. In fall and winter it was dark when we started homework, in late spring it was lighter later. We went to the board looked at the time on the board and the time on the clock to show him it was time to do homework. Oh Man, am I glad those days are behind us. These boards really help! Thank you everyone for such nice comments. I am a firm believer that if you can teach to special needs it will only benefit your class. Love it! I run daycare from my home and have come across this kind of thing on training days. We call them 'visual time tables'As Wendy said they are an excellent resource for children on the autistic spectrum as words don't always have meaning. For example if you say 'we're going to the supermarket' the child may answer 'ok' but get very distressed when you get to the supermarket because it was just a word to them. If you give them a picture of a supermarket to hold it puts meaning to the word and they will be prepared. Hope that makes sense!
I am going to use you as my inspiration and finally make one. It's also a good idea to have all the pictures on velcro so that when one activity is done the children peel it off and put it in a pocket to signal the end of the activity.

Wendy: I am an ABA Therapist for children with Autism and I am a mother of 4, two which were diagnosed with Autism. Reinforcing schedules visually is GREAT! My oldest is now 10. We use an IPOD to help him with his visual schedule. But for our little ones (my students), we cut out shapes or photos and laminate and back with velcro. That way, once an activity is done we can remove the item/shape/photo. Also, if we have to change our schedule around, then we can modify our schedule.
