I just bought a refurbished machine and for some reason, the blade shreds the paper when it cuts. I have tried adjusting the blade but so far it's not helping.
I have tried making sure the paper is fully on the matt--so it doesn't wiggle around when cutting.
Any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong?
I have tried working with construction paper and printer paper. Still comes out really shredded.

Thanks! Is it a new blade? Are there any little bits of paper stuck inside the blade housing? Does it shred both small AND big images?

I've had the same exact problem!! Refurbished Expression purchased appx 1 month ago, which came with a new blade. I tried cutting some simple designs (heart, etc) and instead of cutting, it gouged and ripped the paper, not even cutting it well enough to lift out the design. Setting the cutting pressure to the heaviest level didn't solve the problem.  Have since purchased craft quality card stock but haven't had time yet to see if it cuts better. Am almost afraid to find out that it doesn't!

You should be using card stock, as that is what the machine is made to cut the best. Printer paper and construction paper shred far too easily. You can find it at JoAnn, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, AC Moore, some Wal-Marts, some Big Lots, and some TJ Maxx's just for starters. HTH. GG

Thanks, Godat, I've got time today to try cutting cardstock. I'm mystified, though, because I understood that the Cricut machines could cut many kinds of material, including fabric. I know PC sells vinyl for use with their machines. I hope I'm not confined to just cardstock.
