I don't have one but I am trying to understand the concept. Is embossing folders (I saw a cake, snowman,ETC. ) different then the ones that cut the shapes? I hope that makes sense.

The Cuttlebug can do both die cutting (cutting out shapes) and embossing (leaving an imprint in the paper). Hope this clears it up for you!

I hope that makes sense. Embossing makes a raised imprint on the paper so it gives it texture. Some folders do both Emboss and cut. The folder is a die that can cut and then run through again emboss. I think it will say what it does on the folder or packaging. I've seen this done but don't have the machine to do any of it. I hope this makes sense. Thanks ladies!! Is there something better then the cuttlebug? Wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy embossed paper?

I think you would have more variety using the folders. You can use other brands of folders also, not just the Cuttlebug folders.
A new machine, the eBosser, just came out. I bought it and love it! It's electric so you don't have to use a handle to push the folders through the machine.

The advantage of the Cuttlebug is that you can emboss plain, cheap paper. Embossed paper tends to be more expensive. You can easily emboss shapes you've cut with your Cricut, but cutting embossed paper can be tricky as the blade can snag or stick in the crevices of the embossing. There are a variety of dies and folders. . .some will cut only shapes {I only have a few of those because I have a Cricut!}, some will only emboss and some will cut the shape and then you place it in a matching folder and emboss. I love my Cuttlebug, which I purchased with a coupon and use it to "dress up" cheap cardstock. Here's a card I made with plain white bulk cardstock and a little blue:

So cute. I just purchased one yesterday. I got the cuttlebug and two embossing folders for 54.00. Plus free shipping. what do you use for envelopes when making cards. ?

I usually use printer paper to make my envelopes (I'm el cheapo) or sometimes thin pattern paper. I use a martha stewart scoreboard with envelope maker or my Tags, Bags, Boxes and More 2 cartridge to make my envelopes.
