Just starting to use CCR--wondering if a shape can be cut out of a solid piece of cardstock and how? Thank you for your suggestions.

Do you care where it cuts? I mean, are you trying to make sure it is centered perfectly? By solid, do you mean 12X12?
I have placed cards on my mat (that I wanted to use my markers on) and lined it up the best I could to get the writing inside the card). I have also done some cutouts where I want to fold the card in half and have the cutouts on the top of the card (front page).
What, specifically, are you wanting to do.
I would use a scrap paper to try what you want to try, FIRST. Then, I would make sure I knew where I placed that paper on my mat (to be sure CCR is cutting it exactly where you want it to cut on your chipboard). In my experiences, it seems CCR/PC does not number all the mats the same as they are numbered when you look at them in CCR. This causes a little anxiety when I'm trying to make sure I'm placing my papers exactly where I need them to be on the mat.
Maybe someone else has an easier way to do this.

I'd place the solid cardstock shape on one mat layer (eg. a rectangle) and your other shape on another layer. In the example below I placed the solid rectangle shape at 1" across and 1" down (by using the X & Y coordinates". Then on the other layer I placed a Christmas tree. Assuming I've already cut out the rectangle, I just place that rectangle on my mat at X1 and Y1 and send just the second layer to the Cricut to cut. The Christmas tree will then be cut in the right place on my cardstock.
