I have never seen those before but I have an idea that they were made for someone who possible have carpal tunnel or have a hard time gripping the smaller skinner needle so they are made with a large handle in order for them to grip them. Instead of having to buy a new handle they made it so it is interchangeable to cut the cost. . . of having to buy each one with the handle in different sizes.

I bought a set so I'll let you know when I get them. I love crocheting borders on afghans and scarves.
