What kind of cable you need to connect a cricut to the computer!! I have heard there is free software to download to design with, where do I get it from and is it easy to use?
Complete beginner, have un-boxed my Cricut but am a little apprehensive about setting it up...

Which machine do you have? Usually you can use a cable just like you would use to connect a printer to your computer. Top of this page click on Craft Room, that is where you can design with, but you will need the cartridge to actually be able to cut the image. What's easy for one person to use may not be to another, best to try for yourself. Click on New to Cricut that will help you along as well as Using Your Cricut, all at the top of this page.

Which cartridge do you need? Is there a special one or any cartridge?

You have to use the Cricut cartridges, any of them that you plan to cut an image from is what you need.

If you need help getting started in CCR, check the tutorials that are on the CCR login page and this blog: http://cricutcraftroomblog.blogspot.com/

Success!!! Had to download the updates 3 times before it would work but I have successfully connected the computer to the Cricut!! Only downer is that it won't link my George and Basics cartridge because it says it has the wrong serial number..... I linked my Type Candy though....

Have been able to link all my cartridges, except George and Basic Shapes. Also says wrong serial number. It's the cartridge that came with my cutter. Ideas, anyone?

You can't link George & Basic Shapes using CCR. The only way it can be linked is by using a Gypsy.
I'm not sure whether anyone has tried, but maybe you could give PC customer service a call and see if they can link George to your account for you.
Otherwise, do what many of us do and just leave George plugged into the Cricut.
