UPDATE Nov. 28th: After having no contact from Joysee and the DD only a few days away, I had to make decision to remove her from this swap. I am not putting her on the flaker list as I'm assuming her medical issues are preventing her from checking in with us here on the MB and she does not have a history with any hostess as far as mailing late and she has normally checked in routinely in previous swaps. I hope she recuperates fully and is able to join us again in 2013 swaps!

On the First Day of Christmas my SS gave to me....

What better way to finish off the year then with a wonderfully fun and creative Christmas Secret Sister Swap!

And it surely wouldn’t feel like Christmas if we didn’t have some fun with the 12 Days of Christmas song!

Only this year there is a “twist” to all the directives – thanks to Peachy and her creative mind!

The “twist” is that this will not be a traditional Christmas swap where every item has to be Christmas themed and all about red and green. You can mix it up and create some projects for your SS that have nothing to do with the Christmas holiday. And, once you read the directives for the 12 days, you will notice that peachy has put a little spin on each day. Almost like thinking outside of the box! HappyDales (laurie) hosted this swap last year on a different MB with peachy's help in coming up with the directives. I participated in that swap and it was fun! My favorite last year was how maids a milking becomes a pearl project. So I hope you all will enjoy our 12 Days of ideas this year here on this MB!

Also, it will be okay to purchase up to 4 out of the 12 directives. We’re just asking that you keep your expenditures to a maximum of $25. And please keep in mind that it’s okay to only purchase one or two directives and spend less money. For some of you it will be easier to make all items and spend little, but for others with time constraints it might be easier to do some shopping for your partner and create fewer projects.

Either way, as always, it’s all about creating a wonderfully creative box of goodies that will put a smile on your SS’s face as she unwraps her 12 Days of gifts. (and no, you do not have to open one gift/day for 12 days!)

Now that we have seen all the super fabulous creations and projects and ideas and some pretty awesome techniques from the Round 2 No Excuse swap – I hope it will spur you on and challenge you to go the extra mile and spend the little bit of extra time needed to raise your crafting abilities up yet another notch! Inking, layering, and researching for the “wow” factor all contribute to making a HUGE difference on the final appearance of your items.

Just remember that we all want to receive quality work as well as receive everything that was instructed to be created/purchased for this swap.

Please do your best to follow along with the theme given for that particular day. We all get worried that we can’t possibly create out of our comfort zone, but time and time again it has been proven otherwise! Cheryl doing grunge or Jean doing Steampunk this last round is proof of that!

Most importantly, please remember that if you yourself would not be happy to receive what you have just made, then please don’t send it on to your partner. There are so many helpful people on this Message Board and in this swap forum who will gladly offer ideas, suggestions, links, etc. when asked.

That is half the fun of swapping – showing each other new ideas, new techniques, new discoveries!

THE PEP TALK:

Everyone in Round 2 of the NO Excuse swap did a super job following the rules; being creative and very considerate of their partner’s crafting likes and dislikes; everyone met the deadline; and everyone has posted pictures promptly! No complaints at all! But here’s the lecture just the same… and repeated from previous swap:

What I’m about to say is truly common sense, but it still needs to be put in writing for you all to ponder. This swap is for those crafters who take pride in their work, insuring their projects are neat and clean, of above-average quality or workmanship, and have respect for their partner’s crafting interests. You also must be mature adults capable of following your own crafting schedule in order to complete this swap on time. My day job is babysitting children and I will not have my hobby also include the job duty of babysitting adults. Check-ins will be weekly and if you can’t be bothered to check in then don’t sign up. We all have events in our lives that take us away from crafting and mess with our schedules – so accept that fact and deal with it and acknowledge that you will make an honest effort to follow the rules of this swap accordingly.

These swaps are meant to be fun and meant to be great learning experiences for each of us but there also is a high level of responsibility that goes hand in hand with the fun part of the swap. Please be considerate of that and show respect to your partner, to the entire group of swappers and to your hostess.

It’s my responsibility as a hostess to insure that everyone has a partner that will follow the directions and the rules and make this a positive, memorable swap for her partner as well as for my hostessing duties. The oh so fabulous fun and fabulous and Merry Cheery Directives:

On the 1st day of Christmas my SS gave to me…

A Partridge in a Pear Tree - anything fruity!

Examples: this could be a bought item such as choc. covered cherries, strawberry licorice, pear scented hand soap, fruit gumdrops or jams and jellies or a crafted item such as an altered project with apples or pears or fruit trees, or notecards stamped with a fruit stamp; or I’m sure there are all kinds of fruits to be found on cricut cartridges

Day 2: Two Turtle Doves - Anything pertaining to love

Examples: Find out what your SS would love to have and create it or buy it; or craft a project full of hearts or wedding ideas or anniversary; or find a stamp with Love in it and create using it. This can be romanced themed or this can be what your partner loves: dogs, cats, steampunk, vintage, wrinkled ribbon, tildas, dangles, mini albums, etc.


Day 3: Three French Hens - Anything Paris or French

Eiffel Tower and french themed papers and stamps and embellishments have been popular this past year. Or what about french poodle skirt and the 50’s and french fries in a diner (thinking outside the box); vacationing ideas, travel ideas, shabby chic themes come to mind here also, or go with 3 french hens and use them on an idea!


Day 4: Four Calling Birds - Something made with feathers

You could use actual feathers on a project such as feathers placed on tags and cards or feathers added as an embellishment to home made flowers. Or this could be about birds, Christmas doves and cardinals, snow branches with birds. Or this could be feathers on a hat, feather plume on a fountain pen, feather boas, think vintage.

Day 5: Five Golden Rings – Create a banner using jewel tones.

Jewel tones make me think of rubies, emeralds, golds or vintage Christmas colors

Banners can be horizontal or vertical. (see the Fall vertical banner with wooden squares that Kelley made for DeniseK in No Excuse Rd 2)

Day 6: Six Geese a Laying – Create 3 Oval gift tags

Day 7: Seven Swans a Swimming – 2 items in blue or greens reminding you of the ocean

You can buy something in the colors of blues and greens; you can make something in blues and greens. It does not have to be anything to do with the ocean, though perfectly fine to do that too.


Day 8: Eight Maids a Milking – Create a Pearl themed project

Prima Say it in Pearls comes to mind, but also pearls used on chunky charm dangles and half pearls used as embellishments on projects. Pearl could also be a crafting product such as pearlescent paper (shimmers) or perfect pearls product, or something just the color of pearl.

I’ve seen pearl swirls on altered frames and altered boxes, on pages of mini albums, and tags and cards. The possibilities are endless.


Day 9: Nine Ladies Dancing – Create or alter a purse/bag and fill with chocolate or favorite candy

Day 10: Ten Lords a Leaping – Create 2 Masculine card fronts or create 1 project using masculine colors

Masculine card fronts does not mean the card has to be for a guy – think outside the box…Santa is masculine, a snowman is masculine… Masculine also makes me think of boys, dragons,
or a 10 point Buck or even Rudolph!


Day 11: Eleven Pipers Piping – Either Buy: Trims and Ribbons - 2 items; or create 2 embellishments or flowers using ribbons/trim

Day 12: Twelve Drummers Drumming - Create a project using a music sheet

Me! Me! Me! I want to join! And here are my answers to the questions:

1. My favorite fruit is: I don't think there is a common fruit that I don't like! Apples, strawberries, cherries, blueberries, and pineapple come to mind first though.

2. I would love to receive ______________ from my SS:

First thing that comes to mind is anything that is your specialty. Or goodies from your stash as in very nicely stamped verses for use on cards and projects, or diecuts from dies.

I really lack a variety of Happy Birthday stamps such as a set of stamps.

My favorite glues (zigzag blue tubes and red sticky tape or equivalent) and glossy accents are some items I would welcome

3. My favorite crafting themes or styles enjoyed most by me: At Christmas: vintage shades of red and green instead of primary colors of red and green; Rest of year: I like bright and cheery or I like soft and pretty. But I've seen a lot of pretty nifty grunge/steampunk projects that I never in a million years thought I would like. But now it's all growing on me! So I'm pretty easy to please with styles

4. Do you want your banner to be Christmas themed? I have a Noel horizontal one and a JOY vertical one. So though I don't mind another one, I'd be just as happy to receive one I can enjoy year round in my craftroom. I would hang it across the top of my curtains (currently solid chocolate brown) like where the valance would hang. The window in front of my work table is a double set of windows which means a banner strings perfectly across there! "CREATE" would be one choice. But not opposed to a different word having to do with crafting.

5. Do you have room to hang a horizontal banner? Yes, but either horizontal or vertical is fine with me

6. My favorite chocolate/candy/snack is: At xmas: choc. covered cherries, peppermint sticks

7. What is the COLOR SCHEME in the room you want your banner to be made for? My craft room has beige walls, forest green carpet. Someday I keep saying I will change it to more springy looking, flowers, ladybugs, bright and cheery. But that has not happened yet. But I still would be just as happy with leaning toward that theme. As much as I enjoy vintage, I don't think my craftroom would ever be that theme as I need the brighter colors to create openess and light in the room.

9. What is your hands down absolute favorite Christmas paper right now? I'm not fussy here as I love all xmas paper. Of course I've enjoyed the vintage brands more and more this past couple of years. But I enjoy brighter, cheery ones too. K&Company is always beautiful too. I have not paid much attention to paper pads coming out now for this year's christmas.

10. Do you like tradtional Reds & Greens, Dark Reds and Greens or Blue/white/silver? dark reds and greens as in vintage. My LR is decorated in vintage themed xmas as the walls are a sage green. I have several vintage santas - wall pictures; figurines, ornaments

Kitchen has yellow upper walls, brick red lower wall. Not as vintagey decor but no blues ever used at all. I like vintage carolers, and red cardinals (match my good dishes) and snowmen in my kitchen - so more of a variety. Nothing is funky or modern looking though.

Although I truly have no issues with anything christmas theme I receive, I will admit that from the time my box will arrive thru New Year's...I will be so swamped preparing for the holidays that I won't hardly have a minute to enjoy christmas items. If it's something I can immediately find a place for amongst my decorations, then yes, I will enjoy it more. That's why I like the idea of this swap not having to be all christmas themed....as I will enjoy the items much more after christmas passes when I've found the time to sit back and relax. If everything is xmas...I'll be putting it away instead of displaying it in January.
