I work at a pre school and our 4 year old pre schoolers do journals and we use composition books which you can get a Walmart for $.50 now while school supplies are on sale.

If you have a Staples nearby I suggest trying there as well as Walmart. I just looked at the walmart flyer for the store near me and they have composition books for 50 cents as the usually have the spiral bound ones for around the same price there at some point before school starts

I work for head start too and we use colored paper and comb binder thingies (that's a technical term) and just do them that way.
I know another center used the prong folders and put paper in and just added more as needed.
