I was at Joann's a few days ago & heard the announcement about a teachers/homeschoolers discount. I asked the cashier how I get signed up for it, & she said that I have to show something on letterhead or get something from the state. I live in Texas so we're not "registered" with the state or anything like that. Have y'all signed up for the discount & how did you do it? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Do you not send any type of info to your local school board? If you have any letter from them acknowledging that you homeschool, I think that will work. If you are a member of Home School Legal Defense Association, your card for that will do, too. (I would recommend ALL homeschoolers join HSLDA if you have not.)

If you go to Joanns online and look for Teachers Rewards you will find they will accept HSLDA membership and a PEAH ID found here: http://www.homeschooldigitalid.com/I have used my PEAH member ship at JA's without any problems.

Thanks to both of you. I appreciate it. I'll look into HSLDA.

You might want to try the Texas Home School Coalition to. I am a member of this group and they are awsome. You get teacher id cards and your kids will also get student id cards (that you could use to get discounts). I don't know anything about these other groups but THSC will help you if you ever run into a problem with any school dist. or CPS or anything along those lines. The fee is $100 yr. which I don't think is to bad if you ever run into a problem and need a lawyer. They'll also send mag. and emails keeping you up to date on the changing laws and what not.

you can also make yourself an id card with your homeschool name included. I make kids id cards every year - they need them around here at local malls and such - especially my boys. If I go shopping with them and let the older boys go to stores they want and I go somewhere else - the id cards come in handy. Plus - good reason to purchase a machine to laminate if you don't already have one LOL I make for my family and another one - seems once stuff is laminated (or even just printed on photo paper - .58 for two at Walmart) they believe everything more. For me, I use my HSLDA card or have made my own as well. Edited by user Sunday, February 20, 2011 10:37:11 AM(UTC)

Just curious: Although my daughter has classes and does her schoolwork at home, she is technically enrolled in an online (virtual) school. It is very similar to homeschooling. Would we be able to apply for homeschool discounts too? - Cindy

I always created a new ID card for each year and made them to look like the local school ID card, but with our information.
Cindy - yes, that should be able to work - depending on your state. You can contact the virtual school for a student ID if nothing else or your local school board. But if they consider you to be public-home-schooling, then you can create your own cards.

I don't go to JoAnn's very often so I'm not too concerned about a discount, but it'd be nice to have when I am there. The school is considered an online public school, so I'm not considered a teacher or homeschool. The school provides ID Cards for the students. So how does that work since the discount is for Teachers or Homeschoolers? Technically, we're neither. Would we be able to get the discount? I guess it doesn't hurt to try.

Since I wrote this original post about a year ago, we have moved from Texas to Florida. I just faxed my letter of intent to homeschool yesterday. Once I get confirmation that they have received it, I'll try to use that for getting my discount. Thanks again, & good luck to everyone on a new school year!

AND Michaels also has a discount. They don't have their own cards but I show them my Joanns one and they always give me the discount.
