I am interested in a cricut machine to use for materials in my classroom as well as general craft projects. Of course, being on a teacher's salary I need to pick carefully. I want a machine that will meet all of my needs, but don't want to spend extra for I won't use. Any suggestions?

I would go with the Create.It has a few more features than the origional Cricut but its still pretty simple to use.Also it is portable and smaller than the larger more expensive machines.

Thanks! I should clarify. I meant I wanted to make materials to use in my classroom but I don't have to take it to my classroom. Would you still suggest the same model?

If you are looking to use for bulletin boards and other projuects then go with the Expression. My preference would be the original Expression as you can use both 12x12 and 12x24 mats. Also this is a good little workhorse of a machine. The reason I say go with this machine is you will find the Create not big enough for what you will use it for in the classroom. It is a bigger machine but not by much, and it has many more features than the Create. You can find good deals on this machine at cricutmachine.com they also sell in on Cricut.com and ebay, and many others. This is the machine I have used for making things for my daughter's classroom. Have taken it into work also to use with the kids. There's the original Expression (guessing that's the one for $149) and then there is the new version which is called an E2. The E2 has been running about $189-199. Some of the Michael's still have the Black Friday anniversary ones hidden away in offices too. I want to say it was $189 on BF and it has two preinstalled cartridges on it, one of which is a font. There is also the new cricut mini which is about $129. It only does up to 11 1/4" or so I believe and has to be used with Cricut Craft Room. I haven't followed the reviews etc. on it, but easy to pop to that forum and see what people are saying about it. Just know that the cricut machines are a cartridge based machine. Some people love this and some don't. :)Khrista

I'd go with the Expression as the smaller machines can't cut as large and for a bulletin board, bigger is often better!
I always use 12 x 24 mats. They last twice as long as 12 x 12 because you've got more space, but they are only a few dollars more expensive.
I have had good luck cutting poster board when using a deep cut blade ( you have to buy separately), which cuts down on paper cost.
