Hey,
I'm looking to get into the cricut world, but a little unsure what machine I am looking to buy and also what cartridges and so forth. I do mostly scrapbooking, but I can see myself doing alot of cards since I really enjoy the projects I see on youtube and also on forums involved with cricut. I think I would like to get an expression, or maybe an expression 2. I have been trying to see the reviews from people about both of these machines. Anyways, my question is, on my computer I have alot of fonts that through the years I have downloaded and I loved using when im scrapbooking. Is there a program within the critcut family that allows me to use the fonts on the machines? or am I limited to using the fonts that are on only on the catridges?

thanks for your help!!!

The Cricuts are a cartridge based machine. You can't use fonts or images on them other than the ones that are on the Cricut carts.

Sorry, yes.. Cartridges. The program your friend mentioned used to work with some of the Cricuts but not any more.

Carts is short for cartridges.

You can no longer use the 3rd party software that allows you to cut your own fonts and designs. This was possible in the past, but no longer is. You cannot purchase the software any longer.

You may want to look at a different brand of cutter if you are wanting to go that route. Other companies also make cutters. Provo Craft/Cricut is cartridge based - other brands of cutters are a little more open in what you can cut, as far as designs and fonts.

Hope this helps. If you google Craft Cutters - you will see Cricut and other brands. You can compare them to see what best fits your needs.

Yep - it's a bummer that you can't get the software anymore. I have it and love it, but if you are buying new - it is not longer available.

It makes things a lot more affordable. I bought my Expression for $150 and the software for around $50. I have bought many designs from My Vinyl Designer, but all of them haven't added up to the price of a full price cartridge.

Cricut does have the Craft Room that you can design in -but you have to own the cartridge before you can cut the design. I have seen some amazing things made with the cartridges!

Since there are over 200 fonts on the various Cricut carts, you should have no problem finding a font you want to use. Prices on the cart vary depending on where you buy, so it pays to shop around.

You should go to Narelle's blog and take a look at her Cricut Font Reference Guide to see a sample of each of the Cricut fonts:

The retired carts are harder to find and sometimes pricey {especially on ebay}, but you can usually find them. Check the Products Reviews and Deals forum on this MB.
