1/29/2011 - Cricut Craft Room: An Online Design Tool
Provo Craft Announces Cricut Craft Room: An Online Design Tool
Software as a Service (SaaS) Makes it way to the World of Crafts with this All-new Free Design Application.
Las Angeles– Jan 29, 2011 - Provo Craft today unveiled the all-new software as a service design tool called Cricut Craft RoomTM at the Craft & Hobby Association Winter Convention and Tradeshow in Los Angeles. This new design tool launched in celebration of the 5th anniversary of the Cricut® Personal Electronic Cutting machine; a machine that changed the world of paper crafting and has millions of fans throughout the world.
Cricut Craft Room works with all Cricut machines including the original Cricut® Personal Electronic Cutter, Cricut CreateTM, Cricut Expression®, Cricut CakeTM, Cricut CakeTM Mini, Cricut ImagineTM, GypsyTM by Cricut® and Cricut DesignStudioTM. While Craft Room does have similar functionality to Gypsy and Cricut DesignStudio it does not replace either. Gypsy continues to be the only mobile design device and Cricut DesignStudio does not require an internet connection.
Cricut Craft Room allows crafters and designers to design with a PC or MAC on a virtual Cricut mat--all from the larger format of their computer monitor. The interface is intuitive and simple with features like drag and drop, one-touch welding, image grouping and sizing, and a fast and accurate search feature that makes it simple to find specific images in a vast library.
"Cricut Craft Room is the solution to many of our customer's requests," says Jim Colby, Senior Vice President of Product Development. "With this new software, anyone can design with our complete library and add their personalization by welding and manipulating our artwork on the virtual mat. Customers must own a cartridge in order to cut images from it but they can design and get inspiration from everything."
While Cricut Craft Room does offer the complete Cricut library to customers for designing purposes, they must own the cartridges if they choose to cut with them. Craft Room does require an internet connection which allows customers to access their account and design from anywhere; they can only cut from a maximum of two computers but these computers can be changed at any time.
"Cricut Craft Room gives our customers a new and exciting way to have fun with Cricut. With all of these design capabilities, they can be more creative than ever," says Matt Wilburn, Provo Craft CMO. "We're especially excited to offer Craft Room to them for free."

10/26/2010 - Provo Craft Cricut Create Survives School Fire
And Today Still Helps 7th Graders Make and Preserve Memories South Jordan, UT - October 25, 2010 - April 10, 2010, was an otherwise normal day at
Fredericktown R-1 Middle School, Home of the Blackcats and 421 6th-8th graders, until fire swept down hallways destroying almost every classroom and public area. Fredericktown R-1 Middle School is located in Southeast Missouri in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in a town of approximately 4,000.
Just a few weeks before the fire Amanda Wengler, a home economics and reading teacher to some 130 twelve-year-old boys and girls, purchased a new
Cricut Create from a friend. Wanting a Cricut for a long time she finally took advantage when her friend decided to upgrade to a
Cricut Expression.
"I was so happy I did," she shares in an email, "I teach Middle School home economics and an after school program and part of my curriculum includes memory making and keeping. I took my Cricut to school and the kids, both boys and girls, loved using it for projects and would bring things in throughout the week that they wanted to work on."
Twelve-year old Hunter Kay, one of Mrs. Wengler's students says, "The Cricut Create is great for all our dye cut needs. It ‘wows’ me every time I use it!"
"Our Cricut Create is the most amazing scrapbooking tool ever!" says an excited twelve-year old Krystal Cox, "It has helped me with my scrapbook during our after-school program, Learning Zone. It's so fast at making words, numbers, and all the other cool stuff it does."
On the day of the fire, Mrs. Wenglers's class room experienced severe damage. "Everything was a total loss," she explains. "Nearly everything in my classroom was destroyed, including the scrapbooks of my own children and all of my scrapbooking supplies."
After the shock of the fire, Mrs. Wengler's thoughts turned to her brand new Cricut. She was heartbroken. When she finally had the chance to rummage through the mess and reclaim anything salvageable, she found her Cricut Create. "It was in the original box, sitting on a countertop in my classroom. It wasn’t too badly burned so I grabbed it, hoping for a miracle."
At home Mrs. Wengler lovingly cleaned the singed machine and let it dry out for a few days (it had been soaked by firemen extinguishing the fire). When Mrs. Wengler finally had the nerve to plug in the Cricut and power it on she was thrilled to find that it still worked!
"By some miracle it was saved," says Mrs. Wengler. "It's a little discolored and smells a little smoky but otherwise it works just fine." The fire reached up to 2,000 degrees, melted the glass windows and left nothing but a pile of rubble where Mrs. Wengler’s classroom once stood.
"We'll never tout our machines as fireproof," says a smiling Jim Thornton, CEO of Provo Craft. "We are just thrilled this ends happily, with no injured students and a heroic Cricut survival story. Hearing Mrs. Wengler's account made us grateful for their safety and proud of what we do to help support the education system."
"I love my Cricut Create machine," concludes Mrs. Wengler, "And I’m thrilled I still have it."
Upon hearing Mrs. Wengler's story Provo Craft sent her classroom a new Cricut Expression and several cartridges to replenish their lost library.

4/24/2010 - New Update about Provo Craft's Angel Policy
New Update about Provo Craft’s Angel Policy
April 23rd, 2010
We've gotten some great feedback on the Angel Policy revision we made last week as it pertains to Cake. It's such great feedback, in fact, that we’d like to do something similar for paper crafters and mixed media artists. Moving forward, we're going to combine cake and other mediums so there's just one Angel Policy for everyone. And at the same time, we’d like to provide a bit more clarity to that policy. This will be the official policy going forward, and while there could be additional adjustments or clarifications from time to time, we don’t anticipate any significant changes in the near future.
This new Angel Policy still does not authorize you to produce and sell individual, unassembled cuts using Cricut products (i.e., mass producing individually-cut letters or shapes to re-sell). It does, however, authorize you to sell up to 10,000 completed projects annually (i.e., cards, scrapbook pages, finished cakes), using cuts made with Cricut products. This revision offers the most flexibility possible to those who wish to create and sell projects made using any of the Provo Craft products, while also protecting the creative ideas and images of the independent artists with whom we work to produce art for our cartridges.
We’ve tried to make this new policy as simple and clear as possible. We hope you’ll be really happy with what it allows you to do. But if there’s any part of this policy that you’re still unclear or unhappy about, please call our customer service department at 1-800-937-7686 and we’ll answer your questions. We also recognize that limiting the sale of completed projects to 10,000 differs from what we shared last week specifically with respect to the use of Cricut Cake. So if you bought Cricut Cake this week and find this revision no longer meets your needs, you can contact Customer Service by April 30, 2010 for a refund.
