* * * * * * * * Holiday Greetings for the Soldiers * * * * * * * * *

The theme for the next 3 weeks is going to be different, so please read the information below and ask questions if you aren’t sure.

This is your opportunity to send holiday greetings to the men and women who serve our country.   I learned last year that often the point of contact who receives our boxes will use some of our cards to make sure everyone in their unit has something at mail call.
So we are going to take the next 3 weeks to make holiday cards for the unit leaders to pass out.  You can put a hand written, or typed note inside the card, stamp a greeting inside or whatever you want.  Sign them from you and your family and put them inside the envelope.  DO NOT seal the envelope.  This is very important.   I would suggest just tucking the flap inside.  Also DO NOT address the envelope.  Not everyone who gets our cards are soldiers.  Some are Navy, Marine and Air Force, as well as civilian contractors who support the military.  Last year I wrote Happy Holidays on the envelopes.

Remember--do not seal the envelopes.  However, we discussed that perhaps on a corner of the outside of the envelope you could write the type of card that it is:  Christmas, Hanukkah, Holiday (general) or Winter or any other designation I may have missed.  That will make it easier for the cards to get in the appropriate soldier's hands.

Cards will need to be in the hands of your shipper by Thanksgiving so they can get them sent to arrive in time to be handed out.

The idea is to have fun with the cards while supporting our military.  Every card is appreciated.

* * * *  For those of you who are new, let me explain how this works.

Make cards in any way that you want.  All different, all the same, or a mix of both.
A2 size cards are the most efficient to package up and ship (300+ will fit in a box), however all sizes are fine and appreciated.  Do what you are comfortable with and again have fun.  Try not to have thick embellishments and glitter is discouraged for the safety of the troops.  We are told it can get on their clothing and be seen with night vision goggles.

When you sign up you will sign up for how many you want to do 15,30,45,100. whatever # works for you.   You will also tell us what time zone you are in.  The time zone will tell us to whom you will ship your cards to when you are finished.

That shipper will then compile all the cards and send them to units on the ground in Iraq, Afghanistan, or other bases.  Each time zone has 2 or 3 units (a unit is 120-160 soldiers) to ship to.

Shipping is an expense to us that all the shippers have taken on out of their own pocket.  However if you want to donate a dollar or two for shipping expense overseas then we welcome that.  All money donated goes to pay for shipping to the units.  YOU DO NOT have to donate any money to participate in this project.

If you have any qualms or questions about what we are doing with Cards for Soldiers, please ask in the thread.  There are several great ladies that keep this going and are usually around.

Thank you for joining us and for standing behind our troops.

My goal for the east coast units is 1000 cards.  That should provide at least one card for everyone I ship to and extras.

I would also like to see some Happy Holidays for those who may not celebrate Christmas.  Snowmen are good for these cards.

Pat--good thing I read your post carefully.  I was ready to put you personally down for 1000.  Wow.

And gals, if the East coast can do 1000, the western half of the US out to be able to outdo them!!!

I'm all ready making cards, but I want to make lots again, so I am refraining from a number commitment...

Tuesday was my DS' last day of service in the USNavy.  He's been in the Seabee's and training at Great Lakes for the last eleven years... Needless to say, we are very proud of him! Hoo RAH!
